How to Find Purpose in Life?

Updated: Jul 30

Navigating through midlife can often feel like sailing through uncharted waters. If you’re feeling lost and lacking direction, you’re not alone. At Life’s 2nd Act, I’m on a journey to find clarity and purpose during this transformative phase of life.

If you share this curiosity and the desire to find a clearer vision for the future, this guide is for you.

Why is it so hard to find your purpose in life?

Life is a series of challenges, new directions, and uncertainties. The quest for purpose can feel overwhelming. You may have achieved remarkable success in your career but still feel incomplete. Why is that?

One reason is that finding purpose often involves delving into our subconscious minds, which influence our thoughts and behaviors in ways we don’t always understand. Additionally, societal expectations and personal responsibilities can cloud our true desires and passions. This complexity is why many people struggle to find their purpose.

How do you discover your passion in life?

Discovering your passion, especially in midlife, involves navigating unknown waters, sharing experiences, exploring dilemmas, and seeking solutions together. On my podcast, Life’s 2nd Act, I sit down with subject experts, entrepreneurs, development coaches, psychologists, therapists, health and wellness gurus, and relationship experts to share inspirational stories and valuable insights.

Here are some steps to help you discover your passion:

  1. Reflect on What Truly Matters: Take time to reassess your values and priorities. What brings you joy and fulfilment? Have you lost touch with hobbies, friends, or activities that once mattered to you?

2. Try New Things: Shake up your routine by trying new activities. Whether it’s high-adrenaline adventures like bungee jumping or more low-key changes like taking a walk during lunch instead of staying at your desk, new experiences can reignite your passions.

3. Lose Bad Habits: Identify and reduce habits that don’t serve you well, like junk food, late- night binge-watching, or other vices. Practice moderation and work on gradually eliminating these habits.

4. Seek Guidance and Support: There’s a wealth of resources available, from books and blogs to podcasts and audiobooks. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help and support.

5. A Journey of Small Steps: Finding your purpose is a gradual process. Be patient and practice self-care along the way.

6. Imagine Your Best Life: Visualise what success looks like for you. Who are the people around you? What are you doing? Use this vision to guide your steps.

How do I know my life is on the right path?

Determining if you're on the right path can be challenging. Some days feel fulfilling, while others are daunting. Pay attention to your emotional well-being and stress levels. Do you find joy in daily activities or feel overwhelmed? A sense of contentment often signals you're on the right track.

Notice how present you are in the moment. Enjoying the present without constant worry indicates alignment with your true path. Reflect on how you respond to challenges. Are minor issues overwhelming, or do you handle them calmly? Being on the right path makes obstacles feel more manageable.

If your life flows smoothly and opportunities arise naturally, you’re likely on the right path. Incorporate mindfulness and meditation to become more aware of your thoughts and feelings. Regularly reflect on your values, passions, and goals to gain clarity. Remember, it’s a journey, and staying attuned to your inner self will guide you toward a more fulfilling life.
