A recent trip to Las Vegas inspired me to record short podcast.
I was nestled in a hotel room in Las Vegas, a city where every roll of the dice holds the promise of a new beginning. It's the perfect backdrop for reflecting on my journey so far and the ultimate gamble: betting on oneself. Embracing uncertainty, not knowing how the dice will land, has been a recurring theme in my recent reflections.
My late father, who always saw the silver lining in life, is a big reason why I'm here in Las Vegas with my family to celebrate my brother Sean's 30th birthday. It's been a week full of celebration, reminding us of life's fleeting yet precious moments.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
This podcast has been part of my journey of self-discovery. Although I've read books, listened to other podcasts, and been through therapy, I still can't quite grasp what game my head is playing. I've been fortunate with a supportive family, great friends, and a career filled with opportunities, but a few pieces of the puzzle are still missing.
In conversations with guests like Michael, Simon, James, Rachel, and Neil, I've found that talking to people one-on-one is far more powerful than any book or podcast. Michael and Rachel both highlighted that conversations can be a powerful way to understand oneself.
Conversations That Resonate
- Simon and Michael: Their discussion about stepping out of their comfort zones and how their employer, SAP, allowed them to innovate and explore was eye-opening. Michael's story about hitting a rough patch at 50 and turning it into a learning experience reminded me of Jay Shetty's "Think Like a Monk" story, where what appears bad at one time can eventually turn out good. This made me feel that my current disorienting period might have a more positive outcome.
- James Upton: A retired police chief inspector, James, shared valuable lessons on embracing change and stepping out of comfort zones. His journey of exploring new opportunities has led to unexpected treasures. His feedback showed the value of openness and patience.
- Rachel: Her story of transforming from a hectic Jetsetter to a healthier, more fulfilling life was truly inspiring. She emphasised the importance of self-reflection and manageable steps in making significant changes. Her courage to end a 30-year marriage and pursue a new chapter was a testament to the power of listening to our inner wisdom.
- Neil Pitts: His catchphrase, "It will be all right," deeply resonated with me. His story about a discouraging comment at his first job shaping his positive life attitude was a powerful reminder to push through and remain hopeful.
Embracing Change and Uncertainty
From these conversations, the key takeaway for me is to embrace change and uncertainty with the belief that it will be all right. Stepping into the unknown, even when it's daunting, can lead to personal growth and better outcomes. However, understanding the direction to head towards remains a challenge.
Through this podcast journey, I've stepped out of my comfort zone, leading to amazing experiences and rekindled relationships. If these conversations have resonated with you, I encourage you to subscribe or follow the podcast to stay updated with upcoming episodes.
